What is this concentration calculator?

Concentration is the percentage of how much of a substance (solute) is dissolved in water (solvent), like salt water. Use it for cooking salinity, science experiments, aquariums, and diluting solutions.

Formula

Concentration (%) = solute / (solute + solvent) x 100. Solute needed = target concentration x total / 100. Dilution uses C1xV1 = C2xV2 to find the volume needed to reach the target concentration.

Example

Dissolving 20 g of salt in 180 g of water gives a concentration of 20 / 200 x 100 = 10%. Conversely, to make 200 g of 10% salt water you need 20 g of salt and 180 g of water.

Frequently asked questions

Is concentration based on weight or volume?
The find-concentration and find-amounts modes use mass percent based on weight (g). The dilution mode uses the volume (mL) and concentration relationship (C1V1=C2V2).
Does the total solution amount include the solute?
Yes. The total solution amount is the combined weight of solute and solvent. For example, 200 g means 20 g of salt + 180 g of water.
How is dilution calculated?
Enter the current concentration and volume plus the target concentration, and C1xV1=C2xV2 gives the total volume after dilution. Add water equal to that total minus the current volume.
